Billy Dean / Biography

About Billy.

British actor working across film, television, theatre and voice. Represented by Clarendon Personal Management.

The work.

I’m a London-born actor based in Kent. My screen work includes Kyle in the television pilot Retracing Jemma, Bill in Blood Orange Retribution and Simon in Catch or Kill. On stage, I’ve played Edgar Evans in Terra Nova, Happy in Death of a Salesman and Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing.

I began performing as a child with The Naked Pony Theatre Company. My training includes The Actors Lounge, screen work with Mel Churcher and Tim Kent, and ACTT stage combat. I’m particularly drawn to characters whose outward confidence conceals something more complicated.

Heritage & perspective

People beyond assumptions.

My Romany heritage is an important part of who I am. My father worked as a police breeding manager for the Metropolitan Police, so I grew up among people from both the police and Traveller communities — and with around seventeen dogs at home.

As a child, I knew the people before I encountered the assumptions others made about them. That experience continues to shape how I approach characters: with curiosity about their lives and the reasons behind their choices.

I played the dad in Ice Cream, a film for Travellers’ Times. It was an opportunity to challenge stereotypes about Gypsies and show the family relationships, warmth and humour that too often get overlooked.

My nan encouraged my acting from the beginning, supporting my training at Deborah Capon’s school and my LAMDA exams. Her kindness, lack of judgement and belief in family remain a lasting influence.

Away from work

Family & adventure.

Family is at the centre of my life. My son and I love exploring new places, finding caves and meeting people. He’s also an enthusiastic self-tape partner — and an exacting one. A missed word means we stop, he corrects me, and we go again.

After helping me tape a rude, unhelpful computer geek, he decided to perform his own version. I still have the recording. It never fails to make me smile.

Outside acting, my interests include fitness, horse riding and heritage crafts such as blacksmithing. Spending time with my family keeps that sense of play and adventure close.

Approach

Understanding another life.

Acting has remained a constant throughout my life, including the years spent building a business. Returning it to the centre of my working life was a deliberate choice.

What draws me to it is the opportunity to explore another person’s experience and point of view. Whether on stage or on screen, I want to understand what matters to a character, what they hold back and what drives them to act.
